What is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?

Medication-Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is the use of FDA-approved medication, combined with psychiatric care, to treat opioid use disorder. At Mental Alive, MAT most often means treatment with buprenorphine, commonly known by the brand name Suboxone.

Suboxone works by easing withdrawal symptoms and reducing cravings, without producing the high associated with opioid misuse. This makes it possible to step away from opioids and focus on rebuilding your life, your work, and your relationships.

MAT is considered the gold standard for treating opioid use disorder. It is backed by decades of research and is recommended by leading medical organizations. It is not "replacing one drug with another." It is evidence-based medical treatment, the same way medication is used to treat any other health condition.

Is MAT Right for You?

MAT may be a good fit if you:

  • Are using opioids, whether prescription painkillers or other opioids, and want to stop.

  • Have tried to quit on your own, but the cravings or withdrawal made it too hard.

  • Have a history of opioid use disorder and need ongoing maintenance treatment.

  • Have completed a detox program and need outpatient support to stay stable.

  • Are currently on methadone or another program and want to transition.

  • Are ready for private, respectful care without judgment.

How Suboxone Works

Opioid use changes the way the brain works. Over time, the brain comes to depend on opioids just to feel normal, and stopping causes painful withdrawal and intense cravings. This is not a lack of willpower. It is a medical condition.

Suboxone contains buprenorphine, a medication that attaches to the same parts of the brain that opioids do, but in a safer, more stable way. It calms withdrawal and quiets cravings, without the dangerous highs and lows. With cravings under control, you can think clearly, function day to day, and focus on your recovery.

For many people, Suboxone is the difference between constantly fighting their addiction and finally being able to move forward.

What to Expect

  1. Initial evaluation. We talk about your history, your opioid use, and your goals, and confirm that MAT is the right treatment for you.

  2. Florida PDMP review and safety screening. A standard step to make sure treatment is safe for you.

  3. Starting medication. Many patients can begin treatment within the same week. We will guide you through exactly how and when to start.

  4. Ongoing visits. You will be seen regularly so we can monitor your progress, adjust your medication, and support your recovery. Visit frequency depends on where you are in treatment.

  5. Continued support. As you stabilize, visits become less frequent. We can also coordinate with therapy or other support services when helpful.

Care That Respects You

For many people, the hardest part of getting help is the fear of being judged. Traditional addiction treatment can feel impersonal, crowded, and stigmatizing.

Mental Alive is different. There is no separate "addiction clinic" setting. No crowded group lobbies. Your MAT care happens in the same private, professional, one-on-one setting as any other psychiatric visit, in our office or by telehealth.

You will see the same provider at every visit, someone who knows your story and treats you with dignity. Many patients can also be seen within the same week, because when you are ready for help, waiting weeks for an appointment should not stand in your way.

Insurance & Cost

MAT and Suboxone treatment are covered by most major insurance plans, including Aetna, Florida Blue, Cigna and Evernorth, and UnitedHealthcare and Optum. Your initial evaluation and follow-up visits are billed through your insurance.

For patients without insurance, self-pay options are available: $299 for the initial evaluation and $149 for follow-up visits.

Same-week appointments are typically available.

The buprenorphine prescription itself is filled at your pharmacy and is covered by most insurance plans.

Common Questions About MAT

Is Suboxone just trading one addiction for another?

No. This is one of the most common myths about MAT. When taken as prescribed under medical supervision, Suboxone does not produce a high. It stabilizes brain chemistry so you can function normally. Medical organizations consider MAT the standard of care for opioid use disorder, the same way insulin is standard care for diabetes.

How long will I need to be on Suboxone?

There is no single answer. Some people use MAT for months, others for years. The length of treatment depends on your individual situation and goals. We make that decision together, based on what keeps you stable and well. There is no rush to stop before you are ready.

Will my information be private?

Yes. Your treatment is confidential and protected, the same as any other medical care. There are no group sessions and no public sign-in. Your care is entirely one-on-one.

Do I need to be fully detoxed before I start?

Not fully. In fact, starting Suboxone usually requires being in early withdrawal, not completely opioid-free. We will explain exactly how to time your start so it is safe and comfortable. You do not have to figure this out alone.

Can I get started this week?

Often, yes. Same-week appointments are typically available. When you are ready to make a change, we do not want a long waitlist to be the reason you cannot get help.

If You Need Help Right Now

If you are experiencing a medical emergency or an overdose, call 911 immediately.

If you are in emotional crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

MAT is scheduled outpatient treatment and is not a substitute for emergency care.
